Technical diagnostics for Nuke + NukeX

Find script problems before render finds them.

RFX Nuke Diagnostic Suite gives Nuke artists a technical direction layer inside the comp. Run diagnostics, review issue severity, inspect problematic nodes, understand why a warning fired, and export supervisor-ready reports.

Script Health Missing media, broken paths, disabled critical nodes.
Risk Analysis Colorspace, temporal, realism, and render-cost signals.
Reports Export HTML, JSON, and performance profile data.

Why it matters

Complex Nuke scripts hide technical debt.

A shot can look fine in the viewer but still contain missing media, unmanaged colorspace, duplicate reads, expensive branches, frame-range conflicts, unclear node structure, or risky edge operations.

!Broken paths and unavailable Write directories discovered too late.
!Colorspace mismatches, LUT chains, and viewer-process risk inside the comp.
!Heavy branches and expensive nodes that surprise artists at render time.
!Long wires, fan-out hubs, repeated operations, and graph complexity before handoff.
Core features

A diagnostic layer for professional compositing.

Built for real production workflows: inspect, warn, explain, navigate, export, and clean up safely.

01

Script Health Diagnostics

Find missing media, broken paths, unavailable Write directories, disabled critical nodes, format mismatches, frame-range conflicts, duplicate sources, and disconnected branches.

02

Colorspace + OCIO Risk

Review OCIO state, unmanaged media, suspicious colorspace tags, LUT chains, transform risk, viewer-process mismatch, clipping risk, and mixed pipeline patterns.

03

Render-Cost Profiling

Estimate render cost, find expensive nodes, inspect heavy branches, detect duplicate reads, review output branch cost, and export performance-profile JSON.

04

Temporal Stability Signals

Identify retimes, frame holds, time clips, motion/vector operations, frame-range issues, and temporal stability risk patterns before review or render.

05

CG Realism Risk

Flag aggressive edge operations, over-sharpening, saturation imbalance, black-level clipping, matte/key risk, and artifact-prone comp structures.

06

Graph Intelligence

Score readability, detect long wires, fan-out hubs, repeated operation chains, heavy merge/channel routing, low annotation coverage, and branch complexity.

Module highlights

Focused analyzers for the parts of comp that usually break.

Comp Health

Detect missing media, broken paths, disabled critical nodes, format mismatches, frame-range conflicts, duplicate sources, disconnected branches, and script complexity risk.

Colorspace Diagnostics

Analyze OCIO state, unmanaged media, suspicious colorspace tags, LUT chains, transform risk, viewer-process mismatch, clipping risk, and mixed pipeline patterns.

Performance Profiler

Use deterministic heuristics to estimate render cost, find bottleneck nodes, review expensive branches, and export profile data without low-level render timing dependency.

Temporal Analysis

Inspect retimes, frame holds, TimeClip usage, vector operations, frame-range issues, and stability risk patterns that can create unexpected motion artifacts.

Realism Analyzer

Surface technical CG integration risk signals such as sharp edges, saturation imbalance, clipping, matte/key issues, and artifact-prone comp structures.

Diagnostic Overlays

Create temporary, non-destructive helper branches for edge stress, alpha problems, clipping warnings, grain difference, and viewer comparison.

Main workflow

Run checks before handoff, review, publish, or render.

Open script

Load the Nuke script you want to inspect before review or render.

Launch panel

Open RFX Nuke Diagnostic Suite from the RFX menu inside Nuke.

Run diagnostics

Generate dashboard score, severity warnings, and module-specific findings.

Triage issues

Inspect problematic nodes and understand why each warning fired.

Use overlays

Create temporary diagnostic helper branches only when visual inspection is needed.

Export reports

Generate HTML or JSON reports for supervisors, TDs, and shot handoff.

Clean safely

Keep diagnostics non-destructive and use cleanup controls for temporary tools.

Render smarter

Reduce render surprises by catching technical states earlier in the process.

Supervisor-ready exports

Export clear technical reports.

Generate HTML and JSON reports for handoff, supervisor review, pipeline inspection, or shot documentation. Performance profile JSON export is included for deeper technical review.

Compatibility + safety

Built for Nuke production environments.

Windows Tested Primary tested environment for the current plugin release.
Nuke 15+ Targeted for Nuke 15+ and Nuke 16+ workflows.
PySide6 UI Uses Nuke's Python environment with PySide6.
Studio Validation Linux and macOS depend on local Nuke configuration and studio testing.
Safety statement: Normal diagnostics inspect the script and report findings. They do not modify the comp. Overlay and note/context tools create temporary diagnostic nodes only when explicitly requested, and cleanup controls are provided.
FAQ

Before you add it to your Nuke setup.

Who is this plugin for?

Nuke compositors, compositing supervisors, pipeline TDs, VFX studios, freelancers managing complex shots, lookdev/lighting teams handing CG to comp, and anyone who wants cleaner scripts before review, publish, or render.

Does running diagnostics modify my comp?

No. Normal diagnostics inspect the script and report findings. Diagnostic overlays and note/context tools create temporary nodes only when explicitly requested.

Does it measure exact render time?

The performance profiler uses deterministic heuristics rather than low-level render timing. It is designed to identify render-cost risk, bottleneck nodes, heavy branches, duplicate reads, and output branch cost.

What reports can I export?

The current release supports HTML report export, JSON report export, and performance profile JSON export.

What versions are targeted?

The plugin targets Nuke 15+ and Nuke 16+. Windows is tested. Linux and macOS support depends on studio validation and local Nuke configuration.

Run smarter checks

Keep complex Nuke scripts safer, cleaner, and easier to understand.

RFX Nuke Diagnostic Suite helps compositors catch broken technical states, reduce render surprises, improve handoff quality, and give supervisors clearer technical reports.
